Oh bollokcs. tHere si noe resaon for badd spelink.

dantesinferno - 01:39 - Thu-7-Aug-2008

Oh for pete's sake...

It starts with 'accepted variants' and ends with university students writing theories that start "Well i fink dat gravity works lyk dis..."

If you are teaching children the English language, what's so bloody hard about teaching them to spell?? Next thing you know they'll be forsaking the use of all punctuation except the full stop, comma, exclamation and question marks. They'll be letting kids off for not using capital letters, or paragraph breaks, or vowels.

*joins Pixeh in throwing things*

Twist - 01:42 - Thu-7-Aug-2008

It's the beginning of the end of a need for a dictionary.

WelshPixie - 01:45 - Thu-7-Aug-2008

I like dictionaries. 'Punishment' at my primary school for being naughty was staying in at break and copying out the dictionary from certain letters. It made being naughty more fun.

Twist - 01:49 - Thu-7-Aug-2008

I'm an abysmal speller and even I think that idea is just plain stupid.

sarai - 02:06 - Thu-7-Aug-2008

My comment on the site:

I'd love to know what his colleagues (or 'kolleegs', if you will) in the English department think of this.

Besides, I'd have thought attention to detail would be an important factor in Criminology...

bebbet - 03:20 - Thu-7-Aug-2008

bebbet - 07:40 - Thu-7-Aug-2008

Worse, My education courses are suggesting the very same thing with the addition of acceptable use of "Spanglish" in any papers in classes along the Mexico border.
Puleeze! Da me a break!

etainne - 07:57 - Thu-7-Aug-2008

Purists will always be dismayed at what they consider "proper" use of words, spelling, and language, being misused.

Words change and evolve over the course of time. Some words are forgotten and new ones emerge.
Even what we consider the English language is far different today than the "old" English.

English is a difficult language to learn for many reasons. Double meanings of the same word, exceptions to rules like the i and e.
and pronouncing sh, th, ch, wh, not to mention tense.

For those of us, like myself, who have been educated formally and in the strict old school way, spelling and word use is more of a stickler. My mom actually winces when someone uses the wrong, or let me say "improper" language.

I don't really have an issue with Mr. Smith and his proposal.
He isn't really unleashing total chaos but simply setting out certain words that might be excused from typical spelling errors.

This reminds me of an argument I had with my family about when to use a comma after the "s" rather than before the "s".

How many angels can fit on the head of a pin?
Who knows? Who cares?
What came first the chicken or the egg?
Who decided to call it an "egg" and then put two "g"s on it?

Jeeps
File this under "unresolved questions for the Twilight Zone".

Another item ripped from the bbc news!
The semi-colon may be dying?

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008...shidentity

excerpt;
If you really want to hurt your parents, and you don't have the nerve to be a homosexual, the least you can do is go into the arts. But do not use semicolons. They are transvestite hermaphrodites, standing for absolutely nothing. All they do is show you've been to college.

Kurt Vonnegut

jeeps - 09:18 - Sat-9-Aug-2008

Awww no, not Kurt! Am sad :(

WelshPixie - 09:43 - Sat-9-Aug-2008

kurt vonnegut is a god.
so sayeth the lord.

birdsnest - 03:11 - Sun-10-Aug-2008

Birdy, that's the smartest thing i've ever heard you say.

Except in the sense that Kurt Vonnegut was a devout atheist (I love that phrase).

Still, yeah. Vonnegut. If I ever have two sons, I want to name them Kurt and Mark (after Vonnegut and Twain, respectively.)

thedietcokeofevil - 03:55 - Sun-10-Aug-2008

hence the irony.
he didnt believe in himself.

thats not a bad idea. vonnegut wouldnt make a good first name though.

birdsnest - 04:12 - Sun-10-Aug-2008

you could always go with the original spelling, Funnegut which they changed because in the American accent it sounded too much like Funny Gut.

Yep. I read a couple Vonnegut books.
