What I Decided To Do With EFX

Posted in Stuff

Please pass links to this post around. :)

I think we all know the situation with the domain name registry here. Looks like it's going to be running out at the end of April / beginning of March, and despite many many repeated efforts, I haven't been able to contact Keith. I've seen him log on to MSN a tonne of times over the past three weeks, and every time I've messaged him, I've had no reply. Make of that what you will.

Meanwhile, Utahcon's looking after EFx2.info, but is hideously busy with his own real life to be doing much there. He also had some trouble adding other people as administrators, so he was the only person able to do anything on there.

I got fed up of not being able to contact people. I got fed up of the situation not being under our control and of this site potentially crashing and burning before our very eyes.

So I decided, with Jaco's help (huge help), to take matters into my own hands.

www.efx3.com

It does run on wordpress, and I know a lot of people aren't comfortable with the control panel there. However, it is the latest release of the WordPress MU software and the control panel is much more user-friendly. That being said, I WILL be making a tutorial for navigating it.

It's a work in progress. It already has customisations that the .info site doesn't have. At this point I should mention that Utahcon knows all about the efx3 site and is all in favour. After all, it'll give him a break. Photostyle is also on the admin team, Psyphen is also hovering around on-hand, and all of the above have admin access. We'll also be downloading a backup of the entire site occasionally (like once a month) and sending it around so that we're not the only people with the database, just in case something goes wrong.

I'm sure you can all see how we already have systems and measures in place that cover efx2.com's failings. Take a look a the site - in particular take a look at what we plan to do there, and what we've already done in the mere week since we installed it.

We're hoping it'll take over from this efx when the inevitable happens - the domain name runs out and we fail miserably in its renewal. Hell, even if it does get renewed, the efx3.com site might end up being more stable and therefore possibly better.

So consider it open for registration. Please, go ahead and make blogs there and watch how quickly we progress with developing it. If you like it, pass the word around. Maybe we can get some of the old fex'ers back in town.

Aha! I am officially "there".

Thanks to any of you who are working to make this happen!

DeeJay - 21:59 - Fri-13-Mar-2009

I'm waiting for my confirmation email. Thanks for taking the initiative to be proactive about the situation.

slayerbarbie - 22:56 - Fri-13-Mar-2009

Let me know if you don't get it and I'll sign you up automagically. Also, if you don't get it, let me know which provider you use for email. I know it goes through pretty much instantly on gmail but don't know about any other providers.

And yeah, I just got fed up of waiting and being left in the dark and not being able to contact people, and realised that it was within my own power to fix that, and maybe even improve on existing systems while I'm at it. I imagine everybody else was just as frustrated.

Thanks for signing up :)

WelshPixie - 23:00 - Fri-13-Mar-2009

Thanks for the heads up, Pixie! Will crosspost there :)

Just steeling myself...

indigomoonarts - 00:13 - Sat-14-Mar-2009

Well I've been here since modblog died and I've been blogging since AOL started beta-testing their journals in... jeez... 2002? Yeah I'm not going anywhere anytime soon, hehe, but just in case, we're setting the place up so that more than one person has access to EVERYTHING, and that it can run on its own without us (once it's fully developed).

WelshPixie - 00:14 - Sat-14-Mar-2009

Del, Team Demented were notified last night (my time). My announcement was better. Need a speechwriter? I work for cookies.

Thanks to you and Jaco for all the work you've done and continue to do.

PeriodicallyDemented - 02:29 - Sat-14-Mar-2009

Hey Pixie,

I just checked my email and there was nothing there. You may have to do that magical thing to let me in!

Thanks mucho!

Oh yeah, I am using yahoo mail - I don't know if that made a difference or not, but it sure as heck wasn't very nice about getting me my confirmation. *kicks yahoo*

DeeJay - 02:58 - Sat-14-Mar-2009

I'm using yahoo as well and my confirmation is not here, either.

slayerbarbie - 03:33 - Sat-14-Mar-2009

darkstar - 04:49 - Sat-14-Mar-2009

LadyVisine - 05:55 - Sat-14-Mar-2009

Ya David will be there and LadyV!!

indigomoonarts - 07:00 - Sat-14-Mar-2009

Slayer and Deej, I'll need your email addresses to get you registered - you can pm them to me :) Sorry about that. I'll investigate.

WelshPixie - 07:12 - Sat-14-Mar-2009

Just logged in and I see slayer is there now - Deej did you get the email eventually?

WelshPixie - 07:25 - Sat-14-Mar-2009

It took a while, but it showed up eventually in my spam. Thanks for checking, Pixie.

slayerbarbie - 07:42 - Sat-14-Mar-2009

No worries. Thanks for letting me know it went into your spam - I'll put a note on the registration screen.

WelshPixie - 12:25 - Sat-14-Mar-2009

I just tried signing up, and things went round and round and nothing happened. But when I tried it again, it said the username is reserved and the e-mail is already being used. Nothing in gmail yet, including the spam folder.

drdog - 12:59 - Sat-14-Mar-2009

We're doing some work on it so it's probably lagging a little bit. Give it a while. If nothing shows up, pm me your email address and the username you want and I'll set it up and email you the password. :)

WelshPixie - 13:01 - Sat-14-Mar-2009

Kudos!

bebbet - 14:25 - Sat-14-Mar-2009

Things are moving fast over here. Great news and great work so far. I'm grateful to you and the other admins.

drdog - 15:30 - Sat-14-Mar-2009

Thanks Dr D :)

And thanks to everyone else who's signed up so quickly. It's nice to know that we still have a sense of community here and that people are willing, even after everything that's happened, to keep trying.

WelshPixie - 15:34 - Sat-14-Mar-2009

Okay, I found it in spam as well. *bonks head*

Now I'm scrambling to figure out how to get in. Have I ever mentioned what a dolt I am when it comes to computers?

DeeJay - 19:22 - Sat-14-Mar-2009

Hahahaha. Well you're in the system now, just see the PM I sent you for your login info :)

And go to www.efx3.com and hit the 'log in' link, top right. ^.^

WelshPixie - 19:24 - Sat-14-Mar-2009

I just joined. Thanks for taking over, I was a little sad thinking about May and the end of efx, since not much had been happening over at the efx info site.

Just wondering, in the future will there be any way of designing our own layouts, like we do here?

LauriesAsylum - 20:00 - Sat-14-Mar-2009

It'd be nice if we could make it so that people can design their own stuff.

What you CAN do though, if you're familiar with HTML and CSS (which is pretty much what you needed to design stuff for here anyway) is download a wordpress theme to your computer, play with the CSS file until you make it into a new unique theme, and then give it to us to upload.

WelshPixie - 20:46 - Sat-14-Mar-2009

Any chance of porting over our efx2.blogs sites? Naw...didn't think so...

I so don't have the time or energy to create yet another blog, not when I have mine up and running at Blogspot.

Eclectablog - 16:48 - Sun-15-Mar-2009

Ok, I'll try that. Now if you could only tell me how to download a wordpress theme on my computer, lol.

LauriesAsylum - 20:03 - Sun-15-Mar-2009

Laurie, - http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/ - go here, find one you want to work from, hit 'download' :)

Mr E. - actually, if Martin ever emails me (as I've asked him to do via the shoutbox) and if he's willing to send us the database files from this site, then Jaco CAN develop a script that will import blog posts from here to efx3. So Nyah. ;PpPpPp

WelshPixie - 20:51 - Sun-15-Mar-2009

I'm less worried about the content than the design, hon :D

Eclectablog - 23:56 - Sun-15-Mar-2009

Since you made the design here yourself, I'm pretty sure you can make a wordpress theme too :) It's much the same principle - all you have to do is play with CSS. Find a theme that matches the layout you want, download the file, find the .css file, and change it until you have what you want. Then email the .zip of the whole thing to me, and I'll upload it to the site.

WelshPixie - 08:37 - Mon-16-Mar-2009

hi - chandramoon is now live over there though I won't be blogging there fully till May x

Chandramoon - 10:52 - Wed-18-Mar-2009

That's the "time and energy" that I don't have thing I was talking about...

Eclectablog - 12:52 - Wed-18-Mar-2009

Thanks for uploading those themes for me Pixie. I may also download them and change the CSS around- I don't like the fonts.

indigomoonarts - 20:47 - Sun-22-Mar-2009

No need Indigo - we have a custom CSS editor plugin. See the front page blog posts for details. You can just change the fonts in there. :)

WelshPixie - 22:50 - Sun-22-Mar-2009

Del,
the customizer has nothing to change the fonts with. I need a way to get to the actual CSS like we can in here. Is there a link I am not seeing in there? The other tool is the whole CSS drop in the box but I am not sure I want to do that either- I just want to tweak a few things. How can I reach the CSS sheet?

indigomoonarts - 05:31 - Thu-26-Mar-2009

Hey :)

When you have your efx3 blog open, right-click it and select 'view source'. From the window that opens, look for the link to a page ending in 'style.css'. Copy the URL, paste it into your browser and open it. That's your stylesheet. You can cut and paste that whole thing into the CSS customiser (the plugin that gives you a blank box to work with), and then tweak it.

Actually, here you go, I just did the above for you to get your stylesheet -

http://indigomoonarts.efx3.com/wp-co.../style.css

:)
